There are so many things that can go wrong.<\/p><p>To start, you&#8217;ve worked hard to earn <a href=\"https:\/\/travelseason.com\/rewards\/how-credit-card-points-work\/\">your credit card points<\/a> and you are hoping to <a href=\"https:\/\/travelseason.com\/rewards\/credit-card-rewards-transfer-partners\/\">transfer them to redeem on an airline partner<\/a>.<\/p><p>One of the hardest parts of the whole process is <a href=\"https:\/\/travelseason.com\/guides\/airlines-release-award-availability\/\">finding award availability<\/a> that is able to be booked. Maybe you used <a href=\"https:\/\/travelseason.com\/rewards\/best-points-miles-tools\/\">an award tool<\/a> or did it the old fashioned way of searching with the airline directly. <\/p><p>Regardless, you&#8217;ve found it and now the stressful part comes, actually booking it.<\/p><p>There are so many things that can go wrong in the process and this was actually my experience with Cathay Pacific.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Award availability on Cathay Pacific<\/h2><p>I was looking to book a trip to Japan, no easy feat, but found hope by searching 1 year out on Cathay Pacific for a flight with Japan Airlines.<\/p><p>I found a non stop flight for 4 people from JFK to HND for 89,000 Asia miles each.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/AWARD_Cathay-1024x712.png\" alt class=\"wp-image-13369 lazyload\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"712\" src=\"https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/AWARD_Cathay-1024x712.png\" alt class=\"wp-image-13369 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/AWARD_Cathay-200x139.png 200w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/AWARD_Cathay-300x208.png 300w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/AWARD_Cathay-400x278.png 400w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/AWARD_Cathay-600x417.png 600w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/AWARD_Cathay-768x534.png 768w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/AWARD_Cathay-800x556.png 800w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/AWARD_Cathay-1024x712.png 1024w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/AWARD_Cathay.png 1036w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cathay Pacific Award Flight for Japan Airlines<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>I know how hard it is to get availability to Japan and given I found 4 seats on a non stop flight I knew I needed to secure this quickly.<\/p><p>Amazing, I quickly went to start the process to secure this booking.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transfer points from AMEX<\/h2><p>Now American Express rewards transfer 1:1 to Asia Miles that appear to now operate as Cathay Pacific miles.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Cathay_AMEX-1024x516.png\" alt class=\"wp-image-13367 lazyload\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"516\" src=\"https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Cathay_AMEX-1024x516.png\" alt class=\"wp-image-13367 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Cathay_AMEX-200x101.png 200w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Cathay_AMEX-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Cathay_AMEX-400x202.png 400w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Cathay_AMEX-600x303.png 600w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Cathay_AMEX-768x387.png 768w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Cathay_AMEX-800x403.png 800w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Cathay_AMEX-1024x516.png 1024w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Cathay_AMEX-1200x605.png 1200w, https:\/\/travelseason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Cathay_AMEX-1536x774.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">American Express to Cathay Pacific Award Transfer<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>This was great since I had plenty of AMEX points and was able to cover the booking.<\/p><p>However, I did research that it can often take 48 hours for a transfer to complete. After filling in all the passenger details &#8211; an error.<\/p><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>&#8220;Unfortunately your frequent flyer is not found or does not exist. Please, verify that it is correct and try again.&nbsp;(1395)&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p><p>or<\/p><p>&#8220;<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">An error occured while processing the redemption with the frequent flyer number provided (1332 &#8211; 9253)<\/span><\/em>&#8220;<\/p><p>What did this mean?<\/p><p>After some research it appears that new Cathay Pacific accounts take between 24 &#8211; 48 hours before they can make an award booking.<\/p><p>UGH.<\/p><p>We all know in award flight availability 24 hours can be a lifetime and plenty of time for that flight to no longer be available. <\/p><p>I had no choice but to sit back and just wait.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Error resolution and booking<\/h2><p>I tried a few more times the night of with no luck and decided to try again the following day.<\/p><p>At 9:30am the following morning &#8211; about 18 hours since I last tried I went for it again. Luckily my flight was still available!<\/p><p>And this time &#8211; success!<\/p><p>I was able to proceed to the next screen and complete my booking, although still nervously as I expected some other error to stop me.<\/p><p>Not only was I able to get my flight ticketed but my booking reference worked on JAL as well to let me pick a seat &#8211; giving me further confirmation that I was actually all confirmed for my flight to Japan.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary &amp; Takeaways<\/h2><p>The stress of booking an award flight never seems to go away but the more you do it the more you may be able to anticipate some of these issues coming up.<\/p><p>In this case the only thing to solve this error is time. It is also best to keep trying since there doesn&#8217;t seem to be an exact window of when this error goes away.<\/p><p>How to avoid this and other potentially stressful award booking processes?
